Geography

Posted on 8 July 2011

Current geospatial functionality on the ABS website is largely focused on display and navigation. For example, Census Output and National Regional Profiles. Key boundary files are also available for download in ESRI Shapefile and MapInfo MID/MID file formats.

Upcoming enhancements to Census mapping have been mocked up in Betaworks as well as some data visualisation concepts using Google Maps.

Other possible new functions being discussed include:

  • boundaries available for download in KML format, via both direct link and web service
  • interactive display of ABS boundaries on a map
  • easier mechanism to request/access geographic correspondences
  • a web service providing access to geocoded datasets, narrowed down by location

Are there key services related to geospatial data/metadata or mapping that you feel are missing from ABS offerings? Are there items in the list above which you're strongly interested in? Are there items which you don't consider important at all?

Hi - firstly thanks for making all of this available! We are hoping to develop a directory of local councils on our site, based on your Google Maps visualisations - particularly the Local Government Area maps on this page:

http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/ausstats/nrpmaps.nsf/NEW+GmapPages/national+regional+profile?opendocument

This is a really useful resource for us.

For our purposes (and those of organisations with similar intentions, I guess), itd be extremely helpful if you were able to provide a URL/web service call to your server which takes in two parameters:

1. Council name

2. State

...and returns the polylines data so that we can overlay that on Google Maps.

I find posts generally useful, and often very illuminating.
