Tasmania Together - an internationally recognised initiative for measuring societal progress - full post
Posted on 28 September 2011
Tasmania Together is a state-based initiative that measures whether Tasmania is moving towards the progress goals the community set. Tasmania Together is a world leading project and is often held up as an example of how to measure community progress. It is similar in its aims to Measures of Australia's Progress but is limited to Tasmania.
How Tasmania Together works is that the Tasmanian government, in consultation with Tasmanians, have identified a 12 goals for Tasmania. For each of these goals, there is a set of statistical measures or indicators that indicate whether progress is being made towards that goal. So for example, Goal 1 is 'A reasonable lifestyle and standard of living for all Tasmanians' . Under this goal are 12 indicators, for example "Proportion of households where primary source of income is government pension or allowance". They have a baseline measurement to judge progress against and a set of targets they would like to reach.
MAP 2.0 is a similar initiative to Tasmania Together, although MAP's focus is national rather than state-based. At this stage of the MAP 2.0 consultation, we would like to identify a set of broad goals and aspirations for Australia, possibly similar to the Tasmania Together goals. Do you think that the Tasmania Together goals will make effective national goals?
Due to the diversity and breadth of measuring national progress, we are thinking of grouping MAP's goals under 4 main areas of interest: Social, Economic, Environment and Governance. Do you think it's a good idea to group national goals and aspirations under these four broad areas?
